I have been only living in Brooklyn since I came to New York in 2013 and began documenting the different neighborhoods that I lived in since then because Brooklyn is absolutely unique and interesting to me. My images about Brooklyn are very symbolic, because I capture moments of daily live, decay, construction, and normality. I look for forgotten and abandoned things and places, and for improvisations and repetitions. I believe these are the things that can really tell something about the Zeitgeist of a place and culture and about how people live and feel at a certain time. Brooklyn is a place where people can express themselves rather freely and do what makes sense to them, without thinking too much about it. What people put in their fore gardens and windows is important to them and often meant as an expression of personal values and a message to others. I find that very interesting and I believe that it tells a lot about the people and the city. That people decorate their streets and places or leave warning signs or messages actually means that this city is full people who are trying to connect and communicate with each other and want to share acts of kindness with their neighbors and passersby. I love that about Brooklyn! www.estherboesche.com
