Most of the time, the car is an unphotographed presence. In a landscape, it is probably close at hand but undocumented. This lack of photographic attention parallels a general lack of attention Like clean water, a car is only noticed when its gone.

Instead of landscape without cars, I have photographed cars with landscaping. We have subdued and distanced ourselves from nature due to cars and other technologies. And these technologies change nature. This abstract lifestyle is now our natural mode. Abstraction is not wallpaper. We're driven to abstraction. Naturalism is not only old fashioned but unrealistic. Cars, with their luminous surfaces and pure oscillating colors, bring the transcendence of abstraction from the museum to the street and garage. summaralsemeiry.com
